At first is like 最初に in English. The only difference is is that “at first” kind of implies that the following statement will contradict with the statement that directly follows “at first”.
For example, “at first, my boyfriend was a really nice guy, but then he turned out to be a real jerk”. Notice how the boyfriend being a nice guy and being a jerk contradict each other. In this situation you would use “at first”
Firstly would just be まず。
