「fewer」は不可算名詞と使いますので、fewer peopleの方が正しいですね。しかし、正しい使い分けがよくわからない人が多くいるので、ネイティブの人の中でも間違って数えられない名詞とlessを使ってしまう人が結構いますね。正しい使い分けが分かる僕もたまにカジュアルな会話において正しくないlessをわざと使ってしまうんですけどね。なぜかと言うと、fewerはlessよりなんとなく硬く感じる言葉だからです。
論文やフォーマルな文書には必ず正しい表現を使った方が良いんですが、日常会話においては気にならないので、どちらを使っても構わないと思います。

私が尋ねたかった真意を汲み取った説明をして下さり感動しました。
確かに私自身も、文法的に間違っている事は認識の上、日本語の「全然大丈夫！」というフレーズを使ったりしますので、そういう感覚なのでしょうか。
もちろん、論文等で使う事はないのですが、”less people “とネイティブの方が使っているのを聞くことがあり、実際のところどのくらいポピュラーな言い方なのか知りたかったので、本当によく理解できました。
