これは確定的と不確定的の冠詞の問題ですね。
「a」の場合は「~の一つ」(特別ではない)
「the」の場合は「その~~」(特別)
the design (which you made) : 特別(あなたが作った)
a design : いくつかの中の一つ
なにかを初めて紹介するとき(話し相手の知らないもの)「a」を使いましょう。
I found a book at the store yesterday.
The book (昨日見つけた本) was on sale.
of/for は意味が違いますね。
for = ~のため :年賀状を作るのに一つのデザイン.
of = の : この場合はもう決まってるんですね。
(今年の)年賀状のデザイン = The design OF the ~~。

yes. "a store" と言ったらどこのstoreか話相手がわからない。会話がたぶんこうなる:
A: I found a book at a store yesterday.
B: Oh, what store?
普通は:
A: I found a book at the store yesterday. (いつも行ってる本屋と思われる可能性が高い).
B: Oh, what book?
