これは確定的と不確定的の冠詞の問題ですね。
「a」の場合は「～の一つ」（特別ではない）
「the」の場合は「その～～」（特別）
the design (which you made) : 特別（あなたが作った）
a design : いくつかの中の一つ
なにかを初めて紹介するとき（話し相手の知らないもの）「a」を使いましょう。
I found a book at the store yesterday.
The book (昨日見つけた本) was on sale.
of/for は意味が違いますね。
for = ～のため ：年賀状を作るのに一つのデザイン.
of = の : この場合はもう決まってるんですね。
（今年の）年賀状のデザイン = The design OF the ～～。
