The grammar is different.
"Bajo" must ALWAYS be followed by a noun and it means 'under'. El libro está bajo la mesa.
"Debajo" also means 'under' and can be followed by DE + noun with the same meaning as "bajo". El libro está debajo de la mesa. The preposition is necessary. In some cases it can also be used as an adverb, but there must be (at least an implicit) reference point. Entra en la habitación y verás la cama: el libro está debajo (de la cama).
"Abajo" isn't usually translated as 'under': it is ofen tranlsated as 'down'. It's very common with verbs that imply some kind of movement. Caminar arriba y abajo (to walk up and down). No mires abajo (don't look down). It can also mean "somewhere below". Marta está abajo (in this context, Marta is downstairs). It can never be followed by a noun or by "de".
