Question about English (US)

Would you tell me what the sentence below means ?
It is quoted from 'Of Mice and Men'.
One of the character named Candy, who is an old man with one hand, says like this :

" They'll can me purty(pretty) soon. Jus' as soon as I can't swamp out no bunk houses, they'll put me on the county. ・・・"

I don't understand the phrase "put me on the county". At first, I thought the 'county' meant a 'county jail'. However, if so, the sentence should be like : "they'll put me in the county". Is the phrase colloquial, or some kind of slang ?

Would you help me ?
Thank you.
