Well when you say I was fishing in the pond makes me think they're drowning, I wouldn't ever use "in" since pond is a place, use "at" and to a pond I would say instead "I went to a pond so I can go fishing" the best one is I went fishing at a pond. :)

The first one is incorrect. I went fishing at a pond is the way to say it :)
