I know that when writing Japanese, you can tack on あ い or う to lengthen vowel sounds. But say I come across a word with おう in it - how do I know whether I pronounce the two vowels separately or just elongate the お？

Usually we pronounce おう as elongate the お two times.
But you can also pronounce separately; we recognize the three pronunciations below as the same:
- おー (longer vowel)
- おお (お + お separately)
- おう (お + う)
