Question about English (US)

Could you correct any of my English that sounds strange?

Some people still don’t accept this reality, but if you can’t control how much alcohol and how often you drink it, then it is a disease. The disease gradually progresses even when the person doesn't notice that, and in the last stage of alcoholism, you need to give up all the basic life elements. You may need to stop going to school. You may not be able to work any more. And even if you have a family, you may have ruined it by the time you finally admit that this is a disease. So, even though it is true that many people underestimate how scary this disease is, we need to make efforts to restrict alcohol consumption at the government level.
