Ok so I heard this, "残したのは、四人か" translated as, "so there are only 4 of us left,"

Yes. The verb can come later in the sentence. You can say, 四人が残った or 四人を残した because 残った or 残した was stressed and put it at the beginning. So I think the correct English translation should be, "Left are only four of us."

I think the Japanese sentence may be 「残ったのは、四人か」if the translation is correct.

Could it also be something like, "四人は残った". Or is it more unnatural and do you also expect to hear more after it?

Only four of us have still stayed.

The meaning is ok, I'm just wandering if the verb can come later in the sentence
