Question about English (US)

"There are a number of acute challenges facing life sciences and medical device developers and manufacturers: cost, time to market, and developing custom solutions. "

I found this sentence up above on an article from an online media and got a question on the following line: "life sciences and medical device developers and manufacturers".
What I've learned in my English class is that you can only use "and" like the following "A, B and C".

Could anybody explain why there are more than one "and" in between.
