I don't have an example, but when you read commas you make a small pause between the words. So if you don't use a comma, there won't be a pause. Maybe someone would use it in a novel or something to show someone's way of talking.

My friend, John, is nice.
My friend John is nice.
My friend (John) is nice.
All of those sentences are fine. In the first one, I am pausing to put emphasis on the name. Maybe this is the first time you have ever heard his name, so I want to draw attention to it (comma). In the second sentence, you probably already know John, so I did not pause (no comma). The third sentence illustrates parentheses.
That style works for longer parenthetical phrases, too -- just remember "pause = comma."
