As a child we had to take a lot of spelling tests and had to be able to use the vocabulary correctly in a sentence. I hope this helps.

I practice any new words that I hear or read.

Same as above. Also, kids often either use a dictionary for words they don't know while reading, or try to figure out the meaning of the word by the context and learn it by seeing it used many times.

I think they can be helpful sometimes in giving hints since they usually mean the same thing, such as the prefix "bi" meaning two. But then there's still the rest of the word to figure out as well.

I think knowing common prefixes and suffixes help especially when seeing a new word for the first time because it gives you an idea of the meaning.
