Q: Hitler threatens war unless the neighboring country is given to Germany.
I know what the sentence means. What I'd to know is about usage of "threaten","threaten someone" is easy to understand, but "threaten something " is a little confusing to understand". When natives of elementary school first encounter this expression, don't they get a little baffled as I did?
A: It's a common occurrence to come across sentences like this in English. In particular if the word "threaten" is being used, the "thing" being threatened has to be stated. Otherwise, a reader or listener will wonder about what is being threatened.
In some cases though, the subject of the threats will be implied but in those cases it is typically violence of some sort.
