You can use "brave" in almost every place that you can use "courageous", but the opposite is not true:

"These brave / courageous soldiers lay down their lives for their countries." (both ok)

"The child bravely /courageously (×) gritted his teeth and took the injection."

"Brave" an also be used as a verb, "courageous" does not have this function:

"They braved the snow to go to the movies."

You can also tell someone directly to "be brave" when facing danger, whereas it's much less common to simply tell someone "be courageous".

This is probably due to their origins:

"Brave" comes to English from French, from Italian meaning "bold" in the sense of "brash"/"daring"/"wild"

"Courage" probably comes from Latin meaning "heart/mind", and could cover all sorts of mental states, from bravery to wickedness.
