Q: why do you say... "I often avoid goong to the party" instead to say "I often avoid to go to the party"?
thanks
A: There are verbs which are followed by the gerund and those that are followed by the infinitive or zero-infinitive; and some take either with or without a change of meaning. "avoid" takes the gerund so you use "going". So we say "I avoid eating/drinking/walking....". A verb that takes either is "like" - "I like to go/I like going". A verb that takes only the infinitive is "expect" - "I expect to go to university next year". An example of the bare/zero infinitive is "I may go to the theatre tonight".
