To pit is to compete or challenge. In some sense both words make sense. You can be in a competition with someone as in you are both included in the competition. Also they are your challengers so they are against you in the competition. So bottom line, both make sense but my ears prefer against. I think against matches the sense of aggression and competition in the sentence. Hope this helps.
