According to my dictionary, the meanings of both are too close to differentiate.

ほとんど違いはありません。
読み方ですが、たいがいは「あいだ」と読めばいいです。
ここにいるあいだに、でokay。
「ま」と読むのは、限られています。
example.
あっというまに
またたくまに
まがわるい
まがもたない
まを大切にする
などです。
たとえば
駅と公園の間の道路
つくえといすの間
歯と歯の間
など、物と物の間の時は、あいだと読みます。

There’s no “how to”. Just the matter of collocation. Be exposed to more different sentences including 間.
The example sentence is slightly strange to me and the background of the situation is not thoroughly provided. For the most likely situation I think of, I’d say ここにいるあいだ、時々...手伝いをすることにした.
