I think I cannot add "already" because it is impossible to say "he was already arriving at home"
To add "already", I think we need to add a comma

It sounds strange, but it means he is making coffee at the same time that he is arriving home.

It sounds weird, but it means さっき帰った人はコーヒーを作りました。 He is making coffee as soon as he gets home.

Its sort of like this one time I asked my Japanese friend:"Did you go to your job interview today?"He answered "行ってない" To me, an English speaker, this sounds like "I'm not going," (present-continuous tense) but he was really saying that he didn't go (past tense).
