replace A with B と replace A by B はどう違いますか?説明が難しい場合は、例文を教えて下さい。
My dictionary has the following example sentences:
1. Fear was replaced by anger.
2. I replaced butter with margarine.
Would the meaning change (or would the sentences be wrong) if I switch "by" and "with" like the following?
3. Fear was replaced with anger.
4. I replaced butter by margarine.
Replies from native speakers of English would be appreciated.

"To replace" can be used like "I replace x with y" or "X replaces Y". But you can't say "I replace x by y."
Sentence 1 and 3 are fine.
Anger replaced fear. "X replaces Y"
Fear was replaced with anger. - Passive form of "I replace x with y"
Fear was replaced by anger. - Passive form of "X replaces Y"
I replaced anger with fear. "I replace x with y"
There is a problem with sentence 4.
Margarine replaced butter.
Butter was replaced by margarine.
Butter was replaced with margarine.
I replaced butter with margarine.
These are your options. You cannot say "I replaced butter by margarine."

I see! Thank you very much for answering my question.
It's my mistake that I add "I" (and "d" to "replace") to Sentence 4. It was actually "replace butter by margarine" in the dictionary.) I just wanted to make it a complete sentence. ^^;
