英語 (アメリカ) に関する質問
Any advice on how to get "in the loop"? I feel frustrated when American people talk about things I'm not familiar with. It's difficult to add to the conversation or even get the jokes sometimes. Thanks!

Did you grow up in America? Childhood references can be hard to understand unless you grew up in the same country. I understand your frustration.
It's perfectly fine to ask questions. A lot of people actually love to explain fun childhood references. You can also contribute to the conversation by telling them something fun about your own childhood that might be similar or totally different to theirs. So, you don't need to feel stupid for asking. :)
Regarding celebrities; since you're not interested in the topic, I'd suggest finding people who are interested in the same topics as you are. If that's not a possibility, try glancing through the "entertainment" section of an online newspaper or a gossip website (such as perez hilton).
:) :) good luck!

When American people talk about things they used to do as kids, I usually have no idea what they are talking about. But since everyone else gets it, I'd feel bad about asking the stupid question "what is..."

Also when they talk about celebrities I feel so lost because I don't know many of them. I don't wanna spend time learning who's dating who either :/ yet I wish to talk with people around me when they bring up such topics.

Thanks a lot @snoopen! I didn't grow up in the US. I've only been here for 5 years collectively. Your advice is very helpful. I appreciate it very much.
I'm working in a team of 10 people around the same age, and they talk A LOT and joke a lot throughout the day. I started working with them 3 weeks ago, and I've gotten better at joining and contributing to the conversations. It was super frustrating in the beginning though.
