吗
It is used in simple ‘yes / no’ questions.
这是你母亲吗？
'Is this your mother?'
你是美国人吗？
‘Are you American?’

呢
It can be used in a statement.
But let's look at its use in questions first.
1. 你呢？
‘How about you?’ / ‘And you?’
2. 你在说什么呢？
‘What are you talking about?’
3. 她是谁呢？
‘Who is she?’
（second and third question also sound natural without '呢'. Sometimes, adding 呢 will make the tone sound less aggressive.）

呢 can also be used in a YES/NO question, but the expression is different from 吗.
好吗？
好不好呢？

Most Chinese interrogative sentences end with "吗".
The sentence with the end of "吗" only needs the answer yes or no.
But in general, the sentence with the end of "呢" needs reply with what, how, when or something.
