They are almost equal. Examples:

In fact, it's essentially two forms of one verb - взять being perfect, брать - imperfect one. Он слишком много на себя берет - боюсь, он не справится. Он слишком много на себя взял и не справился. However, they do have some difference - for instance, "взять" can mean "to up and do", like in "он вдруг взял и побежал". There can be further addings to the distinction, but those would be minor, for 99 per cents of the meanings are identical and the difference is in what tense to use.
