"riguardo" significa guardare una seconda volta, cioè guardare attentamente, scrupolosamente.
da qui, quindi, significa anche "premura", "precauzione"
"mettiti a/al riguardo", "stai in riguardo" riposati get some rest
"mettersi al riguardo dalla pioggia" mettiti a riparo to take shelter from the rain
"è pieno di riguardi per la sua salute" pieno di attenzioni
"personaggio di riguardo" personaggio di rilievo, importante
"vestito di riguardo" vestito per le cerimonie ufficiali
"tratta i genitori con ogni riguardo" col dovuto rispetto
In questa accezione "riguardo" è un sostantivo, e quindi richiede l'articolo "il"
"AL riguardo" è la forma giusta, mentre "a riguardo" è da considerarsi sbagliata, sebbene venga usata ampiamente.
"riguardo" può però anche significare "relazione, rapporto, attinenza"
Usare "riguardo" senza articolo potrebbe derivare da questo secondo significato, quando la parola viene usata come avverbio, col significato di "relativamente"
"riguardo a questo, io la penso diversamente" relativamente a ciò about this, I think in a different way
"io non sono informato a/al riguardo" I'm not informed about it
"a questo riguardo, non è stato deciso ancora nulla" relativamente a ciò in this regard, nothing has been decided yet

"riguardo" regge la preposizione is followed by the preposition "a", ma in certe costruzioni può essere la forma verbale transitiva del verbo "riguardare", terza persona singolare: "per quanto riguarda qualcosa", "per ciò che ne riguarda".
