They are the same. Your sentences would be better if you change "of" to "to" . I have a desire to visit the US and I wish to visit the US. Hope this helps.

"Desire" is a strong feeling and "a wish" is a desire for something that will not come easily, something that you cannot have, or something that probably won't happen but you're staying hopeful. basically a wish is a fantasy.
