Question about Spanish (Mexico)

"pero la depresión seguí y seguía"

I know what this means, but why is it "seguí y seguía" and not "seguía y seguía"? Is it a mistake? Is it just to help pronunciation"?

Can you apply this pattern to other verbs? (Ex. "comí y comía", "conducí y conducía", etc)
