"pero la depresión seguí y seguía"
I know what this means, but why is it "seguí y seguía" and not "seguía y seguía"? Is it a mistake? Is it just to help pronunciation"?

"pero la depresión seguía y seguía" Si se puede. Estas bien. Solo tu pequeño error en la oración que te corregí al inicio.
Seguí: Cuando persigues algo o alguien. (Ej. Seguí hasta el final o La seguí y le pregunté su nombre, que en este segundo caso sería más correcto decir "La perseguí y le pregunté su nombre"

Considero que hay un error de gramática, La expresión correcta es "La depresión seguía y seguía" Refiriéndose que la depresión continuo por plazos más prolongados.
