Bracken is a particular type of fern that is extremely common in the British countryside. If I was referring to bracken, I would always call it bracken, not fern. I would use āfernā more to talk about ornamental ferns in gardens and flower arrangements. My grandmother always told us to be careful walking through bracken because āthereās adders in brackenā. You would never use the plural - however much bracken there is itās just ābrackenā.
