From my dictionary, it says like this:
"kanji for common use" - list of 2,136 kanji established in 2010, formerly a list of 1,945 established in 1981
The number of kanji learned in the elementary and junior high school is as below:
Elementary school first grade = 80
Elementary school second grade = 160
Elementary school third grade = 200
Elementary school fourth grade = 200
Elementary school fifth grade = 185
Elementary school six grade = 181
In total = 1006
The number of Kanji learned in the junior high
Junior high school total = 1130 characters
Total of elementary school and junior high school (compulsory education) = 2136 letters.
By the way, do you know Kanji-kentei (Japan Kanji Aptitude Test).
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kanji_Kentei
It says for the 1st level of Kanji-kentei, the ability to read and write 6355 kanji is required!
