At first, Japanese people learned concept of European style backpack in late Yedo era when Shogunate system was attacked by new emerging power who carried Emperor as national ruler in new government system.
Since far back until that era, the only source for information and knowledge about Europe was Dutch. Therefore, most of all knowledge about military affairs were absorbed through Dutch language.
Backpack used by soldiers was ransel in Dutch and word 背嚢(はいのう)was made as corresponding Japanese. ランドセル used by elementary school children nowadays has its history from ransel.
Since Meiji era, Europeans could more freely move around Japan, and those who had hobby of mountaineering started their activities. Majority of mountaineering tools were introduced to Japanese people with German names. I failed to find detailed explanation about it, so I don't know why that phenomenon happened.
Name of リュックサック is possibly one of them. How could Rucksack(ルックサック) in Germany becomeリュックサック in Japanese? Some say phonetic change was influenced by German word Rücken(リュッケン)but another possibility of rugzak(リュッフザック) in Dutch is also unneglectable.
バックパック derived from English word is synonym for リュックサック/リュック.
