It depends on the individual. The bigger issue is asking at all. The most polite way I can think of is:
Would it be okay if I ask you to...?
That way you are also asking if you can ask.
As you get more friendly with the host family members you can change to can/would/could you. You are correct that would/could is usually more polite.
