このごろ、「Yū Japanese Restaurant」という店を見ました。メニューを読んで、その「Yū」は「遊」だそうでした。日本語の言語学のためなので、聞きたいことがあります。「遊び」じゃなくて「遊」はそれだけ意味がありますか？あとは皆さんが「Yū」だけ読めば「遊ぶ」の漢字だと分かることができますか？

Yū を聞いて連想する漢字は次の通り。
悠 遊 雄、、、
他にも沢山ありますけど、すぐに思いつくのはこれぐらい。連想する漢字は個人によって異なると思います。
遊 という漢字でイメージするのは、遊ぶ、遊び心があるということです。

「Yū」と書いただけでは「遊」という意味だとは分かりません。人名の場合もありますし、「優」「悠」「雄」「勇」など、他の言葉を連想する可能性もあります。
「遊」と見ると「遊び」を連想しますが、普通の文では「遊」を単体の単語として使うことはほとんどありません。
例外として、「食・遊・泊」（食べて、遊んで、泊まる）というように、記号的に使うことはあります。

送り仮名はあくまでも正確な文意を担保する役割で、主体は漢字です。単漢字にはそれぞれ意味があり、その意味が複数である場合に送り仮名や文意でその意味が特定されます。
