Se non fossi partito per il viaggio, avrei studiato molto prima dell'esame (ma ero in viaggio, e quindi non potevo studiare)
Non sono uscito con gli amici la settimana scorsa perchè dovevo studiare per l'esame.

@Anna9 Thank you for your answer. I'm sorry I didn't make it clear that what I don't understand is, Aren't both of them same like "I didn't study much when I had to" in English?

@Virtuoso I think the grammatically correct sentence to translate "I shoud have studied" is "avrei dovuto studiare"
If I only say "dovevo studiare", I don't know if the action actually took place, I don't know if you studied or not... "Dovevo studiare, ma sono uscito lo stesso". "Dovevo studiare, quindi non sono uscito".
If I say "avrei dovuto studiare" I'm saying that I should have done that, but I didn't and now I regret it
