Depict is more visual. To show.
"The photo (film, drawing, etc.) depicts a woman dancing"
However, you can use it to describe stories too because the stories make you visualise what is happening.
"Sherlock Holmes depicts a man solving mysteries."
"depict" is more about what the whole picture (book, film...) is showing.
To describe, however, is more about every little detail. You can describe the look of an inanimate object. Description doesn't have to be showing action or emotion.
An example of description being used is: "The table is large and brown and it leans to the side due to it's missing leg. The varnish is worm with use...'
"I just described what the table in my mind looked like."
"I depicted through my description, what the table in my mind looks like"
"Please describe what this photo is depicting"
