剛,on the other hand, can be used in conjunction with another word to have totally different meaning
剛強 very strong

剛性 rigid, this usage is more common in China, less common in Hong Kong

剛 means “just” or “just now” with an emphasis on time
才 means (1) “until” or “only”; (2) “just” in the sentence structure「 ...才.... ，...就... 」(3) a particle to emphasize not doing an action
Examples for 才：
1. 才 / 剛 / 做好 / 啊，也 / 太 / 慢了 / 吧
Lit: only/ just/ finished/ (tone indicator that could translate to “Ah”/“Oh” in beginning of sentences in English) , (particle to emphase the adjective following it) / too / slow / (tone indicator that basically expresses a sigh)
Note that tone indicators are not just spoken but common in written Chinese.
Meaning: Ah, (you have) only just finished (this)? *Sigh* That’s really too slow
2. 演唱會/才/開始, 意外/就/發生了
Lit: concert / just / begin, accident/ (particle indicating accident happens at the same point of time as the first half of the sentence) / happened
Meaning: Concert had just began, accident had already happened.
3. 你/亂說/什麼， 我/才/沒有/作弊
Lit: you/bullshit/ what , I / (particle to emphasize not doing the action following it) / do not / cheat
Meaning : Don’t bullshit, I definitely didn’t cheat!
Together, 剛才 means “just until”, “just now”
examples for 剛才：
1. 誒 你/剛才/有沒有/聽到/一聲/怪響?
Lit: Hey you /just now / (yes/no question indicator phrase)/ heard/ a /strange sound
Meaning; hey, did you just heard a strange sound?
剛 is often used as 剛剛 , which also means “just” “just now”
Examples for 剛：
1. 剛剛/終於/完成了/作業
Just finally finished homework
2. 我/剛/把/作業/完成了

As in @Neal_Yip ‘s reply, 剛 is also a character that’s seen in a number of adjectives. In those cases it’s not a particle but it is just a part of an adjective - for example 剛強 剛烈 剛直 剛毅
