zusammen: together
gemeinsam: mutual(ly), joint(ly)
you can sometimes use "gemeinsam" when you would not use "mutual/joint" in English in my opinion, though:
Sie sind gemeinsam/zusammen alt geworden (they grew old together)
Sie sind zusammen/gemeinsam spazieren gegangen (they went for a walk together)
In those cases, I feel that "gemeinsam" adds a stronger sense of "common interest" (in each other), a little more emotional or "closer" when compared to "zusammen", which sounds like a simple statement of a fact.
