1、一段特定的期间(和时间长短无关)
比如「ゴールデンウイークの1週間にわたって」就对了。
2、在一个很大的范围里有具体的几个点(在全国范围内有什么什么)
而「4つの大きな島がある」在这里就是指的九州本州四国北海道 也就是全日本----不是范围里的点而是范围本身。
说实话这题有点难。。

「5月の連休」を使うなら、「5月の連休の間、この町には観光客が大勢い来た」と言います。
2「日本全国にわたって数多くの国立公園がある」が正解です。
「四つの大きな島がある」を使うなら、「日本には4つの大きな島がある」と言います。

「にわたって」の前の言葉は「範囲や、期間を表す言葉」を使い、その「範囲が大きい」ということを表します。(このニュアンスはとても弱いのですが)
ですから、「5月の連休」の範囲は、観光客が来ても、来なくても変わらないので、不自然な表現になります。
「一週間にわたって」なら、話した人が「一週間も」と感じていることになります。
2.日本全国にわたって( )
a.数多くの国立公園がある b.4つの大きな島がある
「日本全国」だと、私はa.でも不自然さを感じます。
「日本全土にわたって」なら、a.の不自然さはありません。
「国立公園がある範囲は、日本中だ、広いんだ」ということです。たとえば、九州にはない、ということが考えられるので、このような表現が成り立ちます。
それに対して「4つの大きな島がある」は、島が国土そのものなので「全国」でも「全土」でも、その大きさを表す表現として不自然です。
