It is in fact in common use in the UK! Just as you suggested

'folk' kind of means a group of similar people.
'People from that town are weird folk...'
'I'm going to see my folks' = going to see my parents or family
'folk music' = traditional music from a particular region
Casually, 'guys' has much wider usage than 'folks', but I think you have the right idea :)
