Question about Romanian
I live in the United States, and I make several friends who are Romanian few months ago.
Yesterday, we went to a mart, and one of my Romanian friends just took the barcode of a product worth 1 USD to replace with the barcode of the product he bought, which is worth 3 USD. This really blew out my mind coz from my point of view, it's theft.
However, my friend said that he didn't think so. He said that he did pay, and he just paid less, so it's not theft. Also, he said that in his country most people are just like him, knowing this is not good, yet still doing so. Is that true?
I know it is kinda impolite to ask such question, but I really wanna know if it's just my friend talking gibberish, or it's indeed a part of the culture like he proclaimed?

That is not a part of the culture and it should be exposed.
That is indeed theft. Don't tolerate such things next time.
No one is going to cover a thief in Romania. European Standars are to be followed.

Actually, it's kinda both.
Stealing is wrong and you shouldn't do it, but in Romania it's very common and it's often regarded as just a small "sin", something bad, but not bad enough to be a crime.
So we don't take such things very seriously.
I'll have to say that we also cheat on our tests, and we do it A LOT (and I can't emphasize this enough). Like we're literally googling for answers right in front of our teachers, shouting "I think it's B on 10" so that the whole class including the teacher can hear us etc. etc. We are cheating and we are making it VERY VERY VERY OBVIOUS.

No, it is not part of the culture, he seems pretty proud of his act so no wonder he is so quick to generalise and relate theft to the whole country. As another person here said, it is a matter of education, not of culture.

No, it’s not true. And you shouldn’t have that kind of friends. Not everyone is like that. And I’m sorry that you had to meet that kind of Romanian. It’s true that there are some like that one, but we still have hope in Romania too. It’s not that bad as it seems from the outside, we still have good people. And I like to think that the Romanians are friendly and open minded. I wish that they could stop embarrassing our country. >_<

@saharina2002 @light_ur_fire @MikeBL @vicpalagniuc1 @BiaNH @CeliaFlo @ElisabetaMatei Thanks for the reply. Actually, I also tend to believe it's a matter of education, not of the culture. And I do believe that the majority of you guys are good people. Hope one day I could visit Romania!
