These are in Mainland Chinese Mandarin.
In Hong Kong and Macau , people mostly would speak Cantonese and they would write and type in the Traditional Chinese Characters
In Taiwan, most people speak Taiwanese Mandarin and Southern Min and they would write and type in the Traditional Chinese Characters .

感謝can be used in more formal situations, for example if you wanna write a business email to thank a company, or in school settings where you write a thank you card to a teacher.
感means "to feel" you could look at it this way: 「the lower part of the character is a heart 心=❤」 so 感謝(as a verb) is used when you feel extremely thankful and grateful for something or someone.
e.g. 我非常感謝您。(notice the 心 in the last character 您)
This expression as a whole can be used when you wanna express extreme gratitude, usually in formal situations.
When 感謝 is used in a less formal setting or in conversation, you could say:
非常感謝!
感謝你! (notice the ❤ of the last character is no longer here)
I guess you could use these in semi-formal to fairly informal situations. The example I can think of is, when someone in school borrows something, which they *desperately* need (it could be a book for a lesson) from you, they could say 感謝你 but maybe in a more casual tone!
謝謝is used in even more casual situations. It is the most commonly used way in conversation and you can't really go wrong with it. If you ask somebody for directions, you can thank them saying 謝謝(哦)!
An even more casual way to thank somebody is just 謝! it may be considered a bit rude when you're talking to someone who you don't really know of. But to friends, you can say 「哦,謝!」 or 「謝啦!」(the latter sounds a lil bit softer and more friendly than the former)
