We have an optional one-year pre-school for 6-year-olds (esikoulu). After that the kids go to the comprehensive school (peruskoulu). The compulsory comprehensive school lasts 9 years and is for kids aged 7-16. After the comprehensive school it all becomes optional again. You can choose to go to an upper secondary school (lukio) or a vocational school (ammattikoulu). They both take around 3 years to finish. Then you can go to either a university (yliopisto) or a university of applied sciences (ammattikorkeakoulu).
