What does だいたいの勝手もわかる mean?

I probably know how l should do it or behave.

Now I've noticed how difficult it is to put "勝手" into English.

勝手 = boarder line between what you should do and what you shouldn't do.
勝手に = without permission
勝手な = selfish

It's indeed a difficult word to put in English! My Japanese reference book translates it as "one's way; whatever one's please" and other expressions along this line x(
Hiro, if you've time, would you help me better understand the whole sentence?
普段から気軽に利用していると、だいたいの勝手もわかるので、いざ調べ物や研究でもしようときにあわてずに済む。
I can't wrap my mind around the last bit.

What do you mean by the last English sentence below Japanese sentence?

And, if possible, will you give me some background or context of the Japanese sentence questioned?
What is the speaker trying to search for what? You know, Japanese sentence usually have something (like subject) unsaid.
I need to know them.

Oh sorry, I meant to say that I couldn't understand the last part of that sentence.

You're right, I should have given you more background! However, to make things a bit more clear, here's the whole passage from which I extracted that quote:
図書館はぶらっと出かけて新聞雑誌をひろい読みしたり，話題の新刊書をパラパラと開いてみたりしたあと、ゆっくり読みたい本の一，二冊も借りて帰ってくるというように、ごく気軽に利用するのが理想的ではないだろうか。つまり、図書館生活が日常化しているという、状態であり、今日の公共図書館の運営方針は、そのような親しみを持たれるよう務めている。普段から気軽に利用していると、だいたいの勝手もわかるので、いざ調べ物や研究でもしようときにあわてずに済む。
