Get away is used more when you are in close distance or proximity to the person or thing. Stay away says that that the object of the sentence is already or has been told already to keep distance from you. An example would be: As they were walking along beside each other telling jokes, he said something about her hair. She didn’t like that and said ”Get away from me” shoving him back. He stepped forward wanting to ask forgiveness and comfort her reaching to pat her head. “Stay away from me!” she pointed. “I’m leaving!” Running off in the other direction.
