Question about English (US)

May I ask a question about the sentence below, please?

"You know, the thing is, I’ve spent my whole life trying really hard to believe that most people are basically good, even when the ones I knew weren’t."

Is it possible to say "when + noun" like the one in this sentence?
If possible, would you mind giving me another example?
