The above is correct, but I want to clarify that ‘don’t mention it’ can’t be used as or with thank you by the same person.
<Incorrect>
Person A: Thank you, don’t mention it.
Person B: Don’t mention it.
<Correct>
Person A: Thank you.
Person B: Don’t mention it.
So when you said thank you so I replied don’t mention it (from above). 😉

Don’t mention it can be used similarly as you’re welcome. In context, don’t mention it means no need to say thank you/you don’t need to mention thank you.
