The flu and a cold are 2 different diseases. It's the same as difference between saying I have a dog and I have a cat.

@kearbear is right, but a lot of native speakers don't know that and they say "I have the flu" (which is a serious disease) when they really mean they have a cold (which is harmless).
The flu, by the way, is short for influenza.

Okay..I got it...but I would like to ask is it wrong to say "a" flu instead of "the" flu ??
