It's different words
It will be wierd, but ok hah
1. People can use "Мужик" when:
- A male(!) person made u angry and u dont want to say his name and at the same time dont want to use a really bad word to call him u can say "Слышь, мужик!". That way u just attract his attention
- Also that word has positive meaning, male friends can call each other that way.
So I would say EVERYTGING DEPENS ON INTONATION
2. "Гопник"
It's just people that want to do nothing, they dont have goals. They are not educated people, have a small vocabulary and so on
Мужик uses only for male, and гопник u can use for male and female

@olgaburakova02 Ah, great! Thanks! So "мужик" is more like a slightly bad word for "guy", but "гопник" is a social class, I guess? гопники are working class people, but they are lazy?
- Russian

Чаще всего это просто жаргонное слово для обозначения «мужчины» (nowadays it’s just a slang, informal word for “man”). В старину «мужиками» называли крестьян мужского пола (an old-fashioned term for “male peasant”). Слово «гопник» (гопница- female) имеет негативную окраску. Как правило, это человек с низким уровнем образования, хамовитый, грубый в общении и часто с криминальными наклонностями (существует так называемый «гоп-стоп»: компания гопников может остановить человека на улице и потребовать, чтоб тот отдал ему свой телефон или деньги). P.S. Working but lazy people are not called “gopniki”. They may be called in Russian «быдло» which is quite offensive, like calling people “cattle” having no ambitions to stand their opinions or change life for the better.
