For a while now, is definitely including now. But for a long time could be any time in the past.
Also for a while is generally shorter than a long time. And it feels a little like it's unexpected.
Ex: Dad went to the store. He's been gone for a while now. (Meaning it's unusual to take this long)
Vs: Dad went to the store. He's been gone for a long time. That's unusual./He usually doesn't take this long./I wonder why?
You need to say an extra bit to show that it is unusual with "for a long time". "for a while now" it's implied.
