I think there is a slight difference.
“Be interested in” = having an ongoing interest in something. “I am interested in Japanese language and culture, “My husband is interested in art, “My grandson is interested in anime.”
“Take an interest in” feels like the beginning of when the person became interested in the subject, “I took an interest in Japanese language and culture after hosting a Japanese high school student,”. “My husband took an interest in art at an early age,”. “I wish my grandson would take more of an interest in Japanese language and culture than in anime,”. (Just kidding, he is interested in Japanese language and culture, too.)
