Question about Korean

Hi everyone,
Please, could you help me to clarify between 이다 and 있다? 이더 is verb "to be", right? Why 있다 also has the meaning of "to be" and "have"? Then 있었어요 and 이었어요 both have meaning of "was"? How I can distingush them?
Thank you
