Qui si parla del ghiaccio che è intrappolato nel senso di racchiuso, conservato al polo sud e al polo nord. Se si studia quel ghiaccio che è conservato nei due poli da migliaia di anni, è possibile vedere com'è cambiato il clima nel corso della storia.
