''Bu'' implies a thing that is close to you.
Bu alet çok karmaşık. This tool is too much complicated.
''Şu'' implies a thing but that must be far away.
Şu adam ne yapıyor orada? What is doing that guy there?
But you can also use both of them if you want to imply a feeling, topic, thing which can be everything that you can't see with your eyes.
For instance,
Bu duygu inanılmaz. This feeling is incredible. İts usage almost the same in english.
Şu duygu inanılmaz. That feeling is incredible.
Şu lanet konuyu açma artık. Don't mention that damned topic anymore.
Bu lanet konuyu açma artık. Don't mention this damned matter anymore.
